| − | The fourth retreat of Dr. Linden while he was a guest teacher at the Aspen Institute, USA, took place in Klotz, Austria. Following his retirement from the Aspen faculty, Dr. Linden decided to teach a one-week escape in Klotz. The intention of this retreat was to assist Dr. Linden renew his energies for a new period of research and teaching work. Among the topics he wanted to address during the retreat were: How do we grow as teachers? What does being a few really mean for us?<br /><br />On Feb. 22, before departing for the escape, Dr. Linden gave an Aspen Institute Q&A session, where he answered questions about his book, The Power of Positive Thinking. In this talk, he mentioned that among the keys to teaching is to be true to oneself, and that he had developed a specific version of what it means to be true to oneself, that is called the"short retreat in Klotz". In his model, there is no expectation of any thing, except that your energy is really powerful! This can be done through quite simple acts of gratitude, which attract greater waves of energy in your life.<br /><br />At the start of the retreat, on Feb. 14, Dr. Linden presented a brief DVD that dealt with the theme of the day. It was a powerful demonstration of what it means to be a teacher and finished with the Aspen Institute saying that Dr. Linden would be joining them for the next year, teaching and spreading his teaching method throughout the Aspen community. He also presented his latest book, entitled, The Power of Positive Thinking. During his talk he mentioned he was going to be engaging in the Transpac gloriad and also mentioned that he had received the certificate for the preceding month and was actually feeling great about it. He also mentioned that many of our corporate leaders seem to have abandoned the phrase"team-building," and they are afraid to use it because it's been co-opted by selfish, egocentric, leaders who do not care about building teams, or the empowerment it brings. I can understand this, but I also don't think it is a terrible thing. In actuality, I believe leadership, and using team-building actions in the workforce, is absolutely vital to creating leaders. Our business was founded on the simple premise that people were to be treated with respect and dignity, and that their achievement was the key to the perpetuation of America's greatness. It's insufficient to just treat people well now, or even to do a great job, if we want our company to grow and accomplish greater heights in its prestige.<br /><br />Many executives and leaders appear to have forgotten that. If you look back over the last ten years or so, you will see that most have abandoned the term, or at the very least, they've used it sparingly. One interesting example is that of Bob Iger, the current CEO of Disney. He recently gave a speech for an audience in India in which he talked about how using a hotel package to attend a conference in India was a fantastic idea. But he didn't use the phrase"overnight extra-curricular actions."<br /><br />I find this problematic because I feel this is one of the most important benefits of overnight travel and retreats. The main reason is that it enables people to experience a different culture and outlook in the workplace. Imagine being able to visit a corporate team-building escape in India and to see first hand the dedication and creativity of its employees. I also imagine that this experience could help to create a new generation of leaders who are honest and open with their followers, and who value the value of forming connections. And most of all, this kind of opportunity would allow for true professional growth by giving people an opportunity to experience a very different work environment.<br /><br />I'd submit to you that Bob is right, and you should try and use overnight business day trips to foster growth. But if you fail to utilize the opportunities that present themselves to benefit your business, your attempts will simply be a waste of time. And we all know that time is money! So you really do need to be certain that you give the best opportunities to your people so that you can grow your business.
