SIM lock:

A SIM lock, Network Lock, CARRIER-LOCK, imei-lock or (MASTER) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical constraint built into CDMA and GSM smartphones by manufacturers for use by carrier networks to restrict using these phones to a particular locations and/or networks. This is in contrast to a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM restrictions.

Unlocking Technology:

A handset can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the network operator. Different mechanisms contain software operating on the handset or a computer or laptop attached to the handset, hardware devices that connect to the device or over-the-air by the provider. Generally the unlock process is permanent. The code required to eliminate all locks from a cellphone is referred to as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the device is carrier locked it will generally show one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a mobile is going to be able to use it with another SIM card. Consumers might want to carry on using their mobile phone but with a different service provider or when traveling abroad they may need to connect to a international network using a prepay subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Certain organizations offer a imei cell phone unlocking service . This service calls for those people who want to unlock a mobile phone handset to give their IMEI number to a service supplier and quite often they will also request the country and service provider the device is locked to, often sent through email or submitted on their web-site. The company then will provide (for a fee) a unlock code for the handset. For a lot of brands including Nokia and Samsung many services additionally provide unique remote-unlocking software with instructions, when a cable is needed to remove the SIM lock at home. Such suppliers may email the unlocking code or software which can remotely unlock the device. The price for unlocking a cellphone may change based upon the network its locked to and the handset model itself, as each unlock code is unique to each unique device.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Regrettably there are a multitude of fraudulent organizations active in the smartphone imei unlocking industry. As a result it pays to make sure you use a reliable provider for these services. To assist with your search for a reputable company, we have supplied a checklist below (and in no specific order) of a few legit organisations currently offering such services.
