Minecraft on PC has historically been available to download in two distinct editions called the Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition. This will be changing on the 7th of June as both versions are available for purchase on PCs.

You might be wondering what this means for you. It's a minor difference. A single purchase will give you both editions of Minecraft in one package. This means you'll only find one vanilla version of Minecraft on Windows today. If you already have either Bedrock or Java edition you don't have to fret. Mojang notes that all players that have either Java Edition or Bedrock Edition will be able to get the edition they do not currently own for free, directly in the Minecraft Launcher. When Mundo Is Blogging It could take up three days to show up however.

Jave and Bedrock will continue to be their own games with a variety of features. There have been no changes to the features. The only difference is that you will receive both versions as standard when you buy Minecraft for Windows. Both versions are within the same launcher.

Java is available only for PC, Mac, and Linux systems. The Bedrock Edition is also available on PC, Android, iOS, Windows 10 Mobile, and many consoles such as Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and so on. Java is considered to be the more flexible version of Minecraft on PC in terms of mods but it doesn't support cross-platform play. The Java Edition has a higher performance limit, and tends to appear better on high-end gaming computers, while the Bedrock Edition is designed for smoother play and has shorter load times.
