This mod significantly speeds up performance on low-end computers, especially when you have lots of Minecraft mods.

Journeymap

Everyone loves knowing where they're going. Journeymap maps your world as you explore, lets you mark waypoints of interest, and can even warn you when mobs are sneaking up behind you. The resulting map can be viewed in-game in fullscreen, as a minimap or in an external web browser.

Just Enough Items

If you need an antidote to the pain of alt-tabbing to a wiki while playing Minecraft, then turn to Just Enough Items (or JEI). You can access the recipe for any Minecraft mod you have installed through a neat interface on Minecraft's inventory screen.

WAILA

WAILA stands as 'What am I Looking At' and it's a blessing when you have many mods. You can simply point your crosshair to a block and it'll tell what block it is. This will also work for some mods. It will tell the you which mod it is. However, with the newer mods it can also tell the you the current state of the block. It can tell you how full a tank is, or the level of a battery's charge. You will need NEI in order to run it.

Inventory Tweaks Revised

Playable Minecraft in a chest

Mini Minecraft is a mini Minecraft, which can be used to play Minecraft. It's about the same size as a chest. User SethBling posted a video of the mod in action on YouTube with a link to download it in the description. The mod offers all the same features of the original game except that you can control the entire thing using the interface of a Minecraft box.

You'll see all your actions in front of you when you leave the chest.

Controlling

This mod is very simple and will make it much easier to manage controls when you have other Minecraft mods installed. With the Controlling mod, you can simply pull up a search bar and type in the control you're looking for to see what the keybinding is. You can even filter it so it only flags up overlapping keybindings so you can fix them in a jiffy.

Enchantment descriptions

Minecraft creative mods

Many people consider Minecraft the best game because they can create amazing structures. These mods will greatly expand your creativity, from new wood types to furniture.

Chisel

Minecraft only has a couple of cobblestone textures. Chisel has many more. In fact, it adds alternative textures to a huge number of the game's default blocks as well as blocks that come with other mods in this list - letting you create any decor you desire in your in-game constructions.

Carpenter's Blocks

Cubes are great and all, but occasionally you want a slope, right?Carpenter's Blocks delivers those slopes, alongside beds, buttons, doors, flowerpots, torches, and more, all of which you can customise with the texture of any other block. Bibliocraft also offers a bunch of aesthetically-pleasing blocks, but these ones come with their own functionality. Display cases and shelves allow for you to display your trophies, while a printer lets you make in-game books. It even adds a monocle for the distinguished gentlemen amongst you.

Pig Manure

If Minecraft is lacking in one thing, it's poo. The Pig Manure mod, which is a simple mod that allows you to make your pigs shed a heap of the proverbial, solves this problem with ease. It also gives you a new resource to use in Minecraft. Collect the droppings and you can use them instead of bone meal to fertilise your crops. You can also burn them in a furnace to produce bricks you can use to build your house.

Bacteria Mod

Bacteria is an ever-popular mod, so it's high time Minecraft modders added it to their creative sandbox. The Bacteria mod lets you cultivate a range of different bacteria, each of which will perform different tasks - destructive or creative - and set them loose on the world. It's important to properly contain it, especially if you are experimenting in your own home.

Pam's HarvestCraft

Pam's Harvestcraft mod adds more than 1,100 new foods to Minecraft. It includes 60 crops, 17 types and tofu for vegetarian or vegan dishes, as well as 36 fruit bearing trees and 36 other items. The result is a Minecraft meal that's equal parts balanced and lavish. You can make this a requirement and not a fun addition to vanilla Minecraft.

Of course, if you have stashes of food, then you'll want to make sure your cooking is up to scratch. Cooking for Blockheads mod introduces five new blocks that create a multiblock structure for a kitchen. The mod includes a kitchen table, oven and sink as well as a tool rack and fridge. You can think of it as Minecraft. The mod was inspired by Pam's Harvestcraft, so we think they go well together - the possibilities for cooking are almost limitless.

Minecraft exploration mods

Some people prefer a nomadic lifestyle to being a builder. The mods below will spice up your world generation, create new worlds, and give you the tools that you need to explore them. To the Far Lands, or beyond!

Biomes O'Plenty

Let's start with Overworld. Biomes O'Plenty brings Minecraft a staggering 80 new biomes and 12 additional sub-biomes - from Alps, Wasteland, and everything in between. It adds some variety to tools, armour and food, as well as a few more blocks to build with.

LotsObs

LotsOMobs works in the same way that Biomes O Plenty. It adds 25 new mobs to your Minecraft world, allowing you to make your biomes more realistic. No longer are the days when the only creature found in the sea was the squid, and chickens were free to roam the savannah. This mod will allow you to add giraffes and narwhals, seagulls and elephants to your game.

CandyCraft

Here's a great exploration mod for people who avoid the Nether because it is just a bit too demonic and hellscapey. CandyCraft is a sweet-toothed Minecrafter's new way to explore a new world made entirely out of candy. As you explore this sweetly sweet world, there are sugar-coated critters that you can kill, marshmallow tools that you can equip, and honeycomb armour that to wear. Hansel und Gretel, eat your heart!

The Twilight Forest

Much more simple than some of the other exploration Minecraft mods in this list, Twilight Forest lets you create a portal to a new perpetually dim, forested realm full of new mobs and challenging encounters the further you delve.

Galacticraft

Boldly go where no Steve has been before with Galacticraft, an expansive mod that lets you travel to, explore, and even colonise an entire solar system. Aside from all the interplanetary sightseeing, the main draw of this mod is the sheer amount of effort you'll have to put into it in order to escape Earth and its famously surly bonds.

It's a compelling, well-constructed series that rewards you with gameplay opportunities such as building a Moonbase, pimping up your spaceship, fighting evolved mobs of Mars.

BetterPortals

Portals can be a problem when exploring new Minecraft realms. You can't see the world you're about to enter, which can be pretty scary, but also you have to sit through a loading screen.

The BetterPortals mod recreates portals so you can see what world you're about to enter, but also so there's no loading screen to break the immersion. As with all mods there are some incompatibilities. Please check before downloading.

Quiverbow

Mods are not nearly as common as those that focus on the most beloved and ancient weapon, the bow and arrow. Quiverbow gives budding archers a wide range of projectile-based weaponry.

This mod is perfect for any Minecraft sniper. It includes basic additions such as a crossbow, snow cannons, and Minecraft fireworks launchers. Game Blog

Minecraft automation mods

A factory setup in Minecraft can make your base more productive and efficient. It will automatically mine and produce resources, so you don't run out. The following mods offer everything you need to fully automate almost every aspect of modded Minecraft, and work best in conjunction with some of the deeper mods in the final section.

Rope Bridge Mod

Minecraft explorers will find that chasms are an annoying nuisance. You spend minutes climbing up the highest mountain only for to find a series of gaps between it.

Make mountaineering easier for yourself by installing this handy Rope Bridge mod, which provides you with a portable grappling gun that will automatically build a bridge from where you're standing to where it's aimed. It's also particularly useful for building tree-top fortresses.

Caterpillar

Digging is the mainstay of Minecraft. The Caterpillar mod gives you an automated machine to tunnel, so you can explore, kill monsters, and redecorate your base. Minecraft

You'll have to build it yourself, but once you do, you'll be saving hours in virtual labour. The drill head is upgradable too, with different materials offering their own benefits, so there's some scope for you to get really stuck into this miner's delight.

Progressive Automation

This mod adds basic automated devices to everything from farming and forestry. The best bit about Progressive Automation is that each machine can be upgraded as you progress, meaning fewer enormous rebuilds further down the line.

Applied Energistics 2

After a while, storage can become a problem. Applied Energistics 2 is a tool that converts matter into energy. It stores items on hard drives which you can access wirelessly from any location in your base. It's a great tool, especially for hoarders.

Bigger Reactors

Have you ever wanted to be a nuclear engineer without learning about physics and going through multiple years of higher education? You might be interested in Bigger Reactors. Bigger Reactors allows for you to create massive, fully configurable reactors to meet the power requirements of all your other industrial mods.

Even better, this mod can be linked with ComputerCraft, so you can monitor and program your power stations from a safe distance.

ComputerCraft, RFTools

ComputerCraft is our final mention. Itadds fully-programmable computers and assorted peripherals into the Minecraft world. It also adds RFTools that allows you to monitor and manage complex power networks. Both are vital tools for any kind of automated base.

Minecraft expansive mods

The largest mods are those that require a substantial time investment and make significant changes to vanilla Minecraft. For your own sanity, we recommend only tackling one or two of these mods at a given time, even if they are bundled together in a pack. When you reach their final game, you will be the master of all your survey.

Draconic Evolution

The Draconic Evolution mod is a great option if you are tired of wearing Minecraft diamonds and want new gear to show off your friends. Draconic Evolution mod adds tons of new high-tier weapons and armour to Minecraft. It also has its own energy system, which is basically Minecraft's answer for cold fusion.

Other features include a weather control system, teleporters, teleporters, and mob-spawners. In short, it's the ideal mod for anyone who's mastered vanilla Survival mode.

Thaumcraft

Being a wizard is a great thing. Thaumcraft lets your create powerful wands or golems to do what you want, and essence-infused tools and tools.

It integrates well with several other mods. If you want more magic, check out our guide for playing the Minecraft Hogwarts Map.

Simply Jetpacks 2

Simply Jetpacks 2 make everything better. Everything. That's why this humble mod isn't looking to burden you with countless new systems and recipes to remember, it's just trying to give ordinary Minecrafters the gift of instantaneous flight.

Soar into the skies powered by Redstone Flux, letting you avoid hazards and move around the map quickly. You can also use higher-level jetpacks to act as armour or even negate fall injury, so it's worth spending a little time on this handy add-on.

Blood Magic

Sometimes Minecraft can be a bit too cutesy and fluffy. Modders can add ritualistic dark arts to vanilla Minecraft. Blood Magic - the most sinister of all magics – introduces some new systems and mechanics that are based on drawing power from blood mobs.

Once you have enough life essence, it can be used at a Blood Altar to make new items such a Dagger of Salvatione.

Minefactory Reloaded

Minefactory REloaded is undoubtedly the best technology mod. It adds tons of machines and devices that enable you to automate almost anything, from breeding cows to setting in-game records. It also works well together with many of the mods mentioned in the previous section.

BuildCraft

Mining by hand has become a thing of the passé. Everyone knows this. That's why there's BuildCraft, a hugely expansive mod that essentially allows you to put vanilla Minecraft through its own industrial revolution.

This mod allows you to go full-scale with your production lines, from automated quarries and autocrafting tables that will produce any item with the right ingredients.

Hats

The cosmetic Hats mod adds over 100 new hats to Minecraft. It's a great way to surprise and even shock your friends. The hats will randomly spawn on mobs all over the world. You might see a squid sporting a phone booth on its forehead or a creeper wearing a sombrero.

PneumaticCraft

PneumaticCraft allows you to swap out power for pressurised oxygen, making it a highly volatile but rewarding mod. Whether it's air cannons, programmable drones, or a range of assembly machines, this mod adds a host of mechanical and automated options to Minecraft.

We don't think these are the best Minecraft mods. These tweaks and improvements can transform your blocky joy and keep the game going for even longer. Information on the latest features can be found in the Minecraft 1.18 update as well as the Minecraft 1.19 Wild update.
